Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill Opening August 17th
Lake Merritt Boathouse becomes home to 425-seat Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill

Gar and Lara Truppelli already run restaurants along some of the most beautiful square footage at Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park, and now they are expanding to Oakland's 100-year-old Lake Merritt Municipal Boathouse. Lake Chalet and its bird sanctuary surroundings will give East Bay nature lovers a new dining option.
The gargantuan eatery is slated to open on Tuesday, August 17 (ribbon-cutting is tomorrow), and boasts a whopping 325 seats inside and 100 outside. The Truppellis have brought executive chef Jarad Gallagher on board to serve modern California fare with lots of seafood. Locally, chef Gallagher has honed his culinary chops at One Market, Michael Mina, The French Laundry, and La Folie.

Menu highlights include: a Dungeness crab cake appetizer with popcorn puree, sprouts and pickled onion pedals; a grilled Liberty Farms duck breast entree with roasted figs; and a Petrale Sole "Picatta" with potato puree, watercress, tomato, caper-butter sauce and Parmesan (pictured, right). Appetizers are priced from $6.50 to $16.50 and entrees are $13.00 to $29.00.
Plans include weekend brunch, an outdoor BBQ and a raw bar. As for libations, they will serve spirits, wine, and hand crafted Beach Chalet beers.
CCS Architects, the folks behind restaurants such as La Mar, Perbacco, Restaurant LuLu and La Toque, are in charge of the interior design for Lake Chalet. The boathouse's restoration is modern but pays homage to the boating history of the lake and the early 20th century Spanish architecture of the building.
Lake Chalet will be open daily for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and dinner from 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
